“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” said Alice.
“Oh you can’t help that,” said the cat.
“We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?”
asked Alice.
“You must be” said the cat, “otherwise you wouldn’t have come.”

Join us for a fun and experimental sketchup drawing abstract, Alice-inspired portraits!

Where better place to be on the eve of Mental Health Awareness Week 2021 (10th - 16th May), than in Wonderland with the Sketchy Bitches! This is a chance to relax, dive into your mind and create some fun abstract portraits of friendly folk dressed as Alice-inspired characters.

When it comes to drawing faces, we can get so intent on capturing someone’s likeness that it takes some of the fun out of it. This session is a chance to experiment, simplify and stylize your portraits - to engage your imagination and PLAY!

We’ll be striking and sketching 5 minute poses, so it’ll be a little faster and we’ll get through more muses than usual. Posing is done on a voluntary basis, so if you prefer not to be drawn that’s totally cool. We’d always encourage new faces to give it a go though, so please don’t be shy to put yourself forward! Posing is such a special part of the whole experience that everyone should try at least once.

Dress code = Wonderland! (Dress up as a character, don a mad hat or just stick an Alice band on and we’ll use our imaginations!)

What do we mean by abstract?

WELL! By definition, Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead use shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect.

But as a prompt at Sketch Appeal we use the term loosely and often say that Abstract is “the opposite of photorealism”. Minimalism is an extreme form of Abstract art, and Cubism is at the root of it, so you could try simplify or draw something a bit Picasso-style. Anything goes and at the end of the day, who cares how you draw, so long as you’re enjoying it!

Curiouser and curiouser! Some ‘abstract’ portraits drawn at last year’s Abstract session.
